The Aquitaine coastline is a 100 mile stretch of soft golden sand from Bordeaux to the Spanish border. The breakers at Labenne are magnificent for those who are confident in water and the beach is watched over by lifeguards throughout the summer.
There is a childrens’ playpark and a couple of snack-bars at the beach head, and you can use the open-air, showers to remove residual sand if you decide to stay out all day and to have lunch at one of the cafes. The short causeway/slope which connects these beachhead facilities to the beach itself can be difficult to navigate with a pushchair and most people decide to carry their equipment (and children!) if necessary.
The lifeguard HQ at Labenne is manned throughout the season and flies a green flag to indicate that it is safe even for the tiniest tots to play safely in the shallows (as long as they are supervised by an adult) and an amber flag indicates that all swimmers need to exercise caution..
For those who prefer to swim in fresh water, Labenne also boasts an Aquapark which is only a few hundred metres from the chalet/studio. It has multiple pools, cascades, waterfalls and huge slides for the young and the young at heart to enjoy.
