For the keen cyclists the foothills of the Pyrennees are a real challenge – on a clear day the magnificent views make the effort well worth while. The mountain stage of the tour de France takes place in the mountains nearby (at the pic du midi – middle of the pyrennees range), north of the well known pilgimage centre and devotional site at Lourdes. The rue des Cimes (panoramic route) which skirts the lower reaches of the mountains above Biarritz is more accessible and is particularly attractive on a clear day. There are many interesting mountain routes and the Tourist Information offices will be able to advise which ones can be attempted from Labenne in a single day’s ride.
There are several hire shops in Labenne where you can rent cycles for adults and children and also pull-along carts for babies. A cycle ride by the picturesque route along the banks of the river Boudigau makes a lovely family outing; the more adventurous families can easily reach Capbreton this way and enjoy a day out with a picnic by the marina – admiring the boats and seeing how the other half live!
