PELOTE

• The bare-hand game is regarded as the basic version. It is also the moste natural because it uses no special kit.
  
• The chistera version tends to be played in an "open-air" fronton measuring at least 50 metres. The aim is to return the ball as soon as it is received, creating a very fast and lively game.
  
• Grand chistera is only played in France in an "open-air" fronton measuring at least 80 metres and the basket worn as a glove allows the player to take a run up before returning the ball and makes enormously long shots possible.
  
• The rubber pelota is the version most often played by the mass public as a leisure pursuit.

	Originally it was played with bare hands against a wall (fronton), but later arm extensions made of cane and leather came into use, in order to (quite literally) add power to the thrower's elbow. The top class events known as Grand Chistera are an exciting spectator sport.
